Honorable Mention Time Pieces Maryann Hazen Stearns The chain pours into the palm of his hand, "I can fix it. Come back next week." The arthritic owner not its first, but the fourth generation to carry time in his pocket like a lover warm and softly beating against his ribs...yes, a love of sorts. Depicted on the smooth skin of its golden back, a horse-drawn trolley. An unpaved tree-lined street. The same engraving on the front, in reverse. The top of its release button worn from years of thumb pressing. Once opened, his face reflects in its face, glass unmarred. The surface curves delicately, beveled under gold, hinged at the bottom; a work of art. The usual slow but methodical pinwheel of its black hands remain poised; a miniature windmill between gusts, waiting for its next breath of air. The concave inscription that folds itself perfectly against the smooth glass reads: Elijah ~ There will always be time for us ~ Love Sophronia 1872.
